  • IDRAC 8 Version 2.70.70.70 User’s Guide

The Dell iDRAC8 (Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller 8), firmware version v2.70.70.70, is Dell's out-of-band remote management solution designed for rack, tower, and blade server form factors. This controller enhances system availability and administrator productivity by enabling agent-free deployment, real-time monitoring, and hardware troubleshooting across the infrastructure regardless of the host operating system state. Key capabilities include Lifecycle Controller integration for automated provisioning via DHCP Options 43 and 60, comprehensive firmware update workflows managed through Dell Repository Manager, and dynamic IO Identity Optimization to persist virtual MAC addresses and storage target configurations across reboots. The iDRAC8 interfaces with the network through dedicated ports or LAN-on-Motherboard connections, supporting IPv4 and IPv6 protocols with VLAN tagging for segmented management traffic and seamless integration into existing enterprise networks.

Detailed technical specifications encompass robust storage management for PERC 8, PERC 9, FD33xS/D controllers, and MD1200 series enclosures, allowing control over up to 64 virtual disks and inventory tracking for HHHL PCIe SSDs. The system utilizes a vFlash SD card interface supporting capacities from 256 megabytes to 16 gigabytes for local profile storage and configuration backups. Feature access is gated across Basic, Express, and Enterprise licensing tiers, with the Enterprise license required for power capping, virtual console sessions, smart card authentication, and automated crash video capture. Administrators managing the Dell iDRAC8 secure operations using TLS 1.2 or higher encryption, FIPS 140-2 compliance modes, and SHA256 password hashing, while additionally configuring IP blocking and invalid login throttling to prevent unauthorized access attempts.

Secure access to the Dell iDRAC8 is enforced through diverse authentication methods including local accounts, Active Directory integration with extended schema support, Kerberos-based Single Sign-On, and SSH public key authentication. Management interfaces include the RACADM command-line tool, IPMI over LAN, Redfish web services, and a web GUI that supports remote KVM sessions for up to six concurrent users via HTML5 or Java plugins. The document addresses buyer needs for bare-metal OS deployment through Remote File Share or virtual media mapping, bulk configuration synchronization using XML profiles, and disaster recovery capabilities like Easy Restore on 13th generation platforms. Ultimately, the Dell iDRAC8 functions as a centralized hub for infrastructure control, providing granular alerting via SNMP traps or email notifications and reliable oversight of critical server assets through standardized protocols and comprehensive health reporting tools.
