Our Story

TechMikeNY was founded with a vision to provide affordable, high-quality refurbished servers and data center equipment while reducing electronic waste. Our journey began in a Brooklyn garage in 2004. We started with a simple mission – to be the kind of company we would want to buy from. We remain headquartered in Brooklyn, and have recently started operating out of a second facility in Urbandale, IA.

Our parent company, Ombligo, which started as a small operation aiming to provide highly tailored products and IT lifecycle solutions to customers, has grown into a trusted name in the ITAD industry. We've built our reputation on exceptional customer service, rigorous industry expertise, superior refurbishing and testing processes, and a strong commitment to sustainability.

Sustainability is in our DNA. We partner with Native, a Public Benefit Corporation, to finance projects that offset the estimated carbon emissions from shipping products to our customers, and aim to become a carbon-neutral, or carbon-positive facility in the very near future.

Today, we serve customers nationwide, from individuals and small businesses to large enterprises, providing them with reliable and affordable IT solutions that help them grow while reducing their environmental impact.

Our sister company, BuildMyServer, provides a similar range of server products, tailored to individual consumers and smaller businesses that may be more budget-constrained.

TechMikeNY was founded with a strong commitment to reduce electronic waste. We do this primarily by maximizing the number of units of IT equipment that we refurbish, resell and upcycle, thereby minimizing the number of units that we responsibly recycle. Servers represent our largest product category.

Our proprietary testing procedures and proprietary software, T.I.P.S. (Testing, Inventorying and Provisioning System), enable us to enjoy industry-leading return rates on refurbished server parts – often lower than return rates on new equipment – and allow us to process equipment very efficiently. This allows us to pass on significant cost savings to our customers. We believe our refurbishment process to be truly unique, and we take a lot of pride in calling our refurbished products: "Remade in Brooklyn".

As part of our quality assurance procedures, we use a very detailed checklist to ensure that every unit that goes out the door is fully functional, very clean, in good cosmetic condition, and ready to be installed in a robust working environment.

We specialize in both pre-configured, as well as custom-built servers. We help companies with smaller IT budgets afford a robust IT infrastructure without compromising on quality. Last and most important, we take pride in servicing each individual customer; we go above and beyond to always make sure our customers are 100% satisfied, no matter the cost.

ISO 14001 Certified

ISO 14001:2015 specifies the requirements for an environmental management system that an organization can use to enhance its environmental performance. ISO 14001:2015 is intended for use by an organization seeking to manage its environmental responsibilities in a systematic manner that contributes to the environmental pillar of sustainability.

ISO 45001 Certified

ISO 45001:2018 specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, and gives guidance for its use, to enable organizations to provide safe and healthy workplaces by preventing work-related injury and ill health, as well as by proactively improving its OH&S performance.

ISO 9001 Certified

ISO 9001:2015 specifies requirements for a quality management system when an organization needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, and aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system.

R2v3 Certified

R2V3 is the most widely adopted standard for used electronics. R2v3 certification is a company level certification based on the R2v3 standard overseen by the R2 Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). The standard requires certified companies to have a policy on managing used and end-of-life electronics equipment, components and materials.
